The 500mm whirlybird vent is a large-capacity passive roof ventilation unit designed for very large roof spaces and high heat-load environments. Manufactured from UV-stabilized polypropylene, this roof vent removes hot air and moisture naturally without electricity, making it suitable for commercial, industrial, and agricultural buildings.
Est. Delivery: 20 July – 21 July
The 500mm whirlybird vent is a high-capacity passive roof ventilation unit designed for buildings with very large roof volumes and significant heat buildup. This size is typically selected where smaller whirlybirds are insufficient to achieve effective airflow, such as in commercial, industrial, and agricultural structures.
By using wind movement and natural convection, the 500mm whirlybird continuously extracts hot air and moisture from roof spaces without the need for electricity or mechanical systems. As hot air rises and escapes through the turbine, cooler air is drawn in naturally, helping to reduce internal temperatures and moisture accumulation.
This unit is engineered for continuous operation and silent performance, making it suitable for long-term ventilation in demanding environments.

Material & Construction
The 500mm whirlybird vent is manufactured from virgin, UV-stabilized polypropylene with colour and heat stabilizers integrated into the material. This construction ensures resistance to corrosion, rust, and environmental degradation, even in high-heat or coastal conditions.
Unlike metal alternatives, polypropylene does not dent easily, has no scrap value (reducing theft risk), and maintains its appearance over time. The turbine operates on dual sealed bearings, allowing smooth rotation and reliable start-up even in light wind conditions.
Technical Specifications – 500mm Whirlybird Vent
- Throat size: 500mm
- Air extraction: ±4400 cubic metres per hour @ 15 km/h wind speed
- Roof pitch compatibility: Adjustable from 0° to 45°
- Bearings: Dual sealed, silent bearings
- Power source: Wind & natural convection
Recommended Coverage Guide
Ideal airflow
-
Install 1 unit per ±375 m³ of building volume
(approximately 12 air changes per hour)
Minimum airflow
-
Install 1 unit per ±750 m³ of building volume
(approximately 6 air changes per hour)
Actual performance may vary depending on roof height, wind exposure, and building layout.
Typical Applications
The 500mm whirlybird vent is commonly used in:
- Warehouses and factories
- Large workshops and production facilities
- Agricultural buildings and storage sheds
- Commercial roof spaces with high ceilings
- Buildings with high internal heat loads
Due to its large airflow capacity, fewer units may be required compared to smaller whirlybird sizes, depending on roof volume and ventilation requirements.
Whirlybird Size Selection Guidance
Compared to smaller models, the 500mm whirlybird vent is designed for situations where maximum airflow and roof coverage are required. It is typically selected when smaller units are insufficient for the roof volume or heat conditions present.
